Monday, December 10, 2007 Dec 9, 2007 SEA Games: Fencer Lim misses out on gold By Marc Lim, IN KORAT LIM Wei Wen is not one to cry easily. But at the Suranaree University of Technology on Sunday, the 22-year-old national fencer could not fight back the tears. Those watching the men's individual epee final could hardly blame him. He had come agonisingly close to delivering Singapore a dramatic gold medal. Had he won, he would have been the first Singaporean man to win a fencing individual gold medal. But despite stretching Vietnam's Do Huu Cuong to the limit, the South-east Asia Games debutant succumbed in sudden death. The match was also remembered for a dramatic collision between the two fencers. With Lim leading 9-6 , Do lunged in for an attack, but ended up clashing into the Singaporean. Both athletes were winded and the final had to be delayed for a few minutes. It was then that the tide turned, as Do caught up to draw 10-10. Lim led 12-10 with 43 seconds left in the final, but could not hold as as Do again drew level. In sudden death, Do continued his momentum to clinch the gold. Lim's teammate Lin Qinghui won the bronze. Said Lim, as he was consoled by Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports Parliamentary Secretary Teo Ser Luck: 'It's disappointing. But I didn't expect I could go so far. 'So in a way, silver is something I can be proud of.' ----------------- Got this article here. Talking to ww on msn now and he's so upset i feel like crying for him. i think he has done exceedingly well, having only begun fencing in 2005. That's my sports idol. Go(ld) boss! Tomorrow!
